Who we are
We do not rank rooms. We pair them with one reason each.
velioram has been written from Brisbane since 2021. Three writers and a photographer. We take no bookings, no commissions and no paid placements.
Why pairs
A list of good hotels tells you almost nothing. Every entry is competent, every photograph is flattering, and the order is set by whoever paid or whoever ranked. You still have to work out why you would go.
So we write the room and the reason together, and the reason has to be one thing with an address: a public gallery, a market that opens at six, a headland, a lake, a lift, a hall with a program. If we cannot name the second half, the room does not go in.
Who does this
- An editor, who decides what qualifies and what gets cut.
- Two writers, who draft the pairs and hold the word counts.
- A photographer, who works to the same square format throughout.
- No bylines and no staff photographs, because the pairs are the point.
Where our details come from
Open sources: property websites and their own published descriptions, architectural and design publications, park and council information for the reasons, and public transport and access data. We describe places. We do not publish accounts of staying in them, and nothing here should be read as a report from a night on site.
Every entry carries the month it was last checked, and details change between those checks.
Our rules
- No place pays to be here.
- We do not take bookings.
- We publish no prices and no star ratings.
- We do not invent criticism of real businesses.
- Every pair carries the month it was last checked.
What we have corrected
- March 2026
An operator name in the art section was out of date after a change of brand. Corrected and re-checked. - May 2026
A walking time in the capsule section was optimistic. Measured again and rewritten in minutes. - July 2026
An ice entry described year-round access. Three of the four are seasonal, and the catch line now says so.
