The room

This complex occupies the sculptural pavilions built for Expo '67 on Ile Notre-Dame, in the middle of the St Lawrence River. The former French pavilion is the tall one, a stack of angled white planes that still looks like a proposition about the future; the Quebec pavilion sits beside it. Inside, the levels stack vertically around open voids, which is an unusual plan for a building of this type. There are dining rooms, a regular live program and a hotel component on the island. The city sits across the water, close and completely separate.

The reason

Ile Notre-Dame and the St Lawrence River

The island is the reason. Ile Notre-Dame is part of Parc Jean-Drapeau, built from rock excavated for the Metro, and it holds gardens, canals, a rowing basin and the remains of a world's fair. You can walk it. In the evening the view back across the St Lawrence gives you the Montreal skyline from the water, which no room on the mainland can do.

The catch

Island setting; you cross a bridge to get anywhere else.

The room

Fallsview was built in the early 2000s on the escarpment directly above the Niagara gorge, and the whole plan is organised around that edge. The public levels step down the slope, so the glass faces the water rather than the street behind. There is a theatre in the building that takes touring names, a spa, and restaurants positioned along the view side. Rooms in the Fallsview category look straight at the falls, which is the only real reason to choose the height of this building over the town below it.

Niagara Parks, Ontario

The falls are three hundred metres away and about fifty metres below, and from a Fallsview room you are looking down the length of the Horseshoe. Niagara Parks runs the land along the rim, so the walk beside the water is public and continuous. Go at first light, when the coach traffic has not arrived, and again after dark when the falls are lit. In winter the spray freezes on the railings.

The room

River Rock sits on the water at Richmond, on the arm of the Fraser River, about ten minutes from Vancouver International Airport and on the Canada Line into the city. The complex is large and low, with a hotel, a marina of its own, restaurants, a spa and a purpose-built show theatre under the same roof. The setting is estuary rather than city: flat water, boats, aircraft turning overhead. As a building it is a working resort complex rather than a piece of architecture, and it is organised for people arriving with luggage.

The theatre is the reason, and the airport is what makes it practical. Touring acts are booked into the room through the year, and you can land, take the SkyTrain two stops, see a show and fly out the next morning without ever renting a car. That is a specific use for a specific night: the first or the last night of a longer route through British Columbia, with something scheduled in it.

Casino Rama stands on the lands of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, near Lake Couchiching, about ninety minutes north of Toronto. It is a resort in the full sense: hotel rooms, a spa, several kitchens, golf nearby, and a large entertainment hall that has hosted touring acts since the late nineties. The landscape does the framing here, lake country rather than city, with water and trees on the approach roads. It is a destination in itself rather than a stop, and it is built for people staying two or three nights.

The reason

The Entertainment Centre and Lake Couchiching

Rama, Simcoe County, Ontario

Two things sit together here. The Entertainment Centre is one of the larger concert halls outside Toronto, and it programs through the year, so a night here can be built around a date rather than around the drive. Around it is Lake Couchiching and the water country between Orillia and Georgian Bay, which is where the daylight hours go. The hall gives you the evening; the lake gives you the morning.
