A capsule stay qualifies when the sleeping unit is a pod and the rest of the building is shared: bathrooms, kitchen, laundry, lounge. What does not qualify is a small hotel room with a clever headboard. Australia has few of these, so the four here are the ones we can describe, and every one of them lives or dies on what stands within ten minutes of the door.

Every entry below is one room and one reason, in that order, with the catch written plainly and the months we would choose.

The room

The Capsule Hotel sits on an upper floor on the corner of George and Liverpool streets, in the middle of the Sydney CBD. You get a capsule rather than a room: a bed, a screen, lights, power, a locker and a curtain, with bathrooms, kitchen and lounge shared along the floor. It is the Japanese format transplanted, and it runs on the same logic, which is that you are not meant to spend the day in it. Town Hall station is two minutes away, and that puts most of the city inside a short train ride.

Paddy's Markets

Paddy's is about eight minutes south, under the Market City building in Haymarket. It trades Wednesday to Sunday, produce at one end and everything else at the other, and it is loud, cheap and entirely unsentimental. That is a fair match for a bed in a capsule, because neither of them is pretending to be something else. Go early on a Friday, buy fruit for the week, and carry it back to a kitchen you share.

The catch

Shared bathrooms and kitchen, and the market is shut on Monday and Tuesday.

The room

Space Q is a capsule hotel in Haymarket, at the southern end of the city, with pods stacked in rows and a shared kitchen, lounge and laundry alongside them. The pods are enclosed and lit from within, so the effect is closer to a berth on a ship than to a bunk in a dormitory. Everything you would normally find in a room sits somewhere else in the building, and that is the trade you are making. Central station is a short walk away, and Chinatown starts at the corner, so dinner is settled before you arrive.

Capitol Theatre

The Capitol is a hundred metres away on Campbell Street. It began as a market building, became a picture palace in the nineteen-twenties with a ceiling painted as a night sky, and now runs long seasons of touring musicals. You can walk out of a pod and into that auditorium in two minutes. Check what is on before you book, because the programming runs in blocks of weeks rather than changing nightly.

The catch

Shared facilities throughout, and Haymarket stays loud until late.

The room

Little Drifter sits on Franklin Street at the northern edge of the Melbourne grid, and the pods are the point: enclosed sleeping berths with a light, a socket and a door, arranged along a corridor with the kitchen, laundry and lounge shared. The building is a hybrid and keeps private rooms as well, so the pod floors run quieter than a dormitory. Melbourne Central is five minutes away on foot and the trams on Elizabeth Street pass the door, which means you can arrive by train and never move the luggage again.

The market is a minute away, which is closer than most people manage to their own kitchen. It has traded on this block since the eighteen-seventies, and the produce sheds open early, Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday. Deli hall at one end, meat and fish at the other, sheds in between. A pod has no kitchen of its own, but the building does, and the distance between the two is the shortest in this guide.

The catch

The market does not trade on Mondays or Wednesdays.

The room

This is a small pod and private-room house in Abbotsford, a few streets back from the Yarra, in an inner-eastern suburb of brick terraces and converted factories. The pods run the capsule format at a domestic scale, with self check-in and shared bathrooms and kitchen. It stands on a residential street rather than a strip, so the noise at night is trains rather than bars. North Richmond station is next door, which puts the city about ten minutes away and makes a car unnecessary for the whole stay. Nothing about the building announces itself from the street.

The convent is about a kilometre away: a group of nineteenth-century buildings on eleven acres above the Yarra, now an arts precinct with studios, galleries, a bakery and a farm next door. Entry to the grounds is free and they open daily. It is the sort of place you walk into without a plan and leave two hours later. Pair it with a pod and the arithmetic is simple: you sleep in four square metres and spend the day on eleven acres.
