How a pair works

A guide that ranks hotels tells you which room is best. It does not tell you what you will do at seven the next morning, which is the part that decides whether the trip was worth the drive.

So every entry here is written as two halves. First the room, in about a hundred words. Then one reason, with a name and an address: a public gallery, a produce market, a headland, a lake, a lift, a hall with a program.

Then the catch, in a single line, because everything worth doing costs something in distance, season or noise. If we cannot name the second half, the room does not go in.

The room

The Olsen belongs to the Art Series, and the series runs on one idea: each hotel takes a single Australian painter and puts the work through the whole building. Here it is John Olsen, whose paintings hang in the corridors, the suites and the public rooms, with his line carried into the graphics as well. Suites are apartment-sized, most of them with a kitchenette and a curved glass balcony, and the pool sits on the roof with a glass floor. The hotel stands on Chapel Street in South Yarra, so trams, shops and kitchens all start at the door.

The reason

NGV International

St Kilda Road, Melbourne

The National Gallery of Victoria's St Kilda Road building is about fifteen minutes away by tram, and general entry to the collection is free. The water wall at the entrance and the stained glass ceiling in the Great Hall are the two things people come back for. Pair it with a hotel built around one painter and you get the argument and the counter-argument in a single morning: one body of work, then several centuries of everybody else.

The catch

Chapel Street is busy at night; ask for a room away from the street side.

The room

Space Q is a capsule hotel in Haymarket, at the southern end of the city, with pods stacked in rows and a shared kitchen, lounge and laundry alongside them. The pods are enclosed and lit from within, so the effect is closer to a berth on a ship than to a bunk in a dormitory. Everything you would normally find in a room sits somewhere else in the building, and that is the trade you are making. Central station is a short walk away, and Chinatown starts at the corner, so dinner is settled before you arrive.

The reason

Capitol Theatre

Campbell Street, Haymarket

The Capitol is a hundred metres away on Campbell Street. It began as a market building, became a picture palace in the nineteen-twenties with a ceiling painted as a night sky, and now runs long seasons of touring musicals. You can walk out of a pod and into that auditorium in two minutes. Check what is on before you book, because the programming runs in blocks of weeks rather than changing nightly.

The catch

Shared facilities throughout, and Haymarket stays loud until late.

The room

Hotel de Glace is the only ice hotel in North America, rebuilt each winter at Valcartier, about half an hour north of Quebec City. It works to a theme each season, with carved suites, an ice chapel and a bar where the glasses are cut from ice as well. Rooms are snow and ice throughout, so you sleep in an arctic bag on an insulated pad and use the heated pavilion next door for everything else. The season is short, usually January to late March, and the building comes down at the end of it.

The reason

The fortifications of Old Quebec

Vieux-Quebec, Quebec City

Old Quebec is thirty minutes away, and it is the only walled city north of Mexico. The ramparts run about four and a half kilometres, and you can walk the circuit past the Citadelle and along the terrace above the river. It takes a couple of hours in the cold. Pair it with a hotel that will not exist by May and you get both extremes of the same place: four centuries of stone, and a building with an expiry date.

The catch

Winter only, and you need a car or a shuttle from Quebec City.

Do places pay to be here?

No. Nobody pays, nobody can pay, and there are no affiliate links anywhere on this site. If that ever changes, it will be written at the top of every page before it changes anything else.

Can I book through you?

No. We hold no availability and we do not pass enquiries to any property. Deal with the property directly.

Where do your details come from?

Open sources: property websites, design and architectural publications, and public park, transport and council information. We describe places rather than publish accounts of staying in them, and every set of pairs carries the month it was last checked.

Why are the casino and ice pairs not in Australia?

Because the buildings that qualified are not. The art and capsule pairs are all Australian; the four casino pairs are Canadian, and the four ice pairs are in Sweden, Canada, Norway and Finland, because Australia has no ice hotels. Each one earned its place the same way as everything else, on the strength of a specific reason beside it. In the casino section we describe the buildings, the stages and the settings, not the gaming.
